It’s been 12 years since the IPL first launched, giving Indian cricket fans a thrilling event to look forward to every year. Still, even the most excitable fans couldn’t have guessed what was in store for them on Sunday night, as Kings XI Punjab played Mumbai Indians, in what some are calling the “best cricket match ever” on social media.

The team from Punjab eventually edged past the Mumbai Indians, but not without some very late drama, as for the first time in the tournament’s history, the match saw not just one, but two super overs being played to decide a winner.

At the end of their 20 overs, both teams had tied on a score of 176/6. The game then went into a Super Over, which also ended in a tie, mandating the first second tiebreak in the IPL’s history. In that over, Chris Gayle and Mayank Agarwal managed to score the required 12 runs, bringing victory — and an essential 2 points — for Punjab

It was a great game of cricket, the batting was top notch. MI’s Jasprit Bumrah and Punjab’s Mohammed Shami were very impressive with their bowling in the super overs.

The match, while disappointing for Mumbai fans, sparked celebrations on Sunday night, as cricket enthusiasts took to Twitter to hail the game. Former Australian bowler Brett Lee called it the best match of IPL ever, a view which many others shared.

The superman save from Mayank Agarwal was the talk of the town even on Monday morning.

Commentator Harsha Bhogle hailed the performances of both teams for putting on such a spectacle. As did former Indian player Suresh Raina.

BCCI secretary, and Home Minister Amit Shah’s son, Jay Shah, noted that the quality of cricket being played this year was above the rest.

But that wasn’t all. As KXIP and MI outplayed each other at every step of the way, the match between the Hyderabad Sunrisers and Kolkata Knight Riders also ended in a super over. After both teams scored 163 in their 20 overs, KKR managed to emerge victorious after conceding just 2 runs in their tiebreak over.

Clearly, for cricket fans, it doesn’t get any better than this.
