The Face Shield & Mask Drama Didn’t Work! Several Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai Actors Have Covid

Coronavirus cases in the country have picked up as India has gone into a phased unlock. As the economy opens up and people head to vegetable markets, offices and public spaces, cases have spiked. The pattern has also been observed in the entertainment industry, which was opened up much earlier and asked to follow safety protocols while shooting. Several crew members of the hit TV show, Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai have now tested positive for Covid-19.

These include three actors (Sachin Tyagi, Samir Onkar, Swati Chitnis) and four technicians. The shoot of the show has been halted.

Rajan Shahi, the producer of the show said that the set was sanitised, fumigated and the team was following all steps as per protocol. In a statement, he said “The three actors are an integral part of Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai. As they are asymptomatic, they are under home quarantine. We immediately got everyone on the set tested, and four of the crew members tested positive. The BMC has been informed, and the entire set has been sanitised and fumigated. Currently, all of them are receiving medical attention under home quarantine. We are constantly in touch with them as their health is our priority. We stand by our commitment to safety and will continue to ensure that all safety and precautionary measures are adhered to.”

A clip from the show had recently gone viral as the cast was seen in a romantic scene that involved wearing gloves, shields and using hand sanitisers. Social media users had termed it relationship goals during a pandemic. The team had last celebrated Ganesh Chaturthi on set together.

Actor Sachin Tyagi, who plays the role of Manish Goenka on the show stated that he got infected despite taking all precautions. The actor revealed that he had initially tested for dengue but also decided to also take a Covid-19 test. Both his reports tested positive, following which he is isolating at home. “The good part is that I am asymptomatic so no real reason to worry. I want to thank everyone for their concern and all the good wishes that have been pouring in. Hoping for a speedy recovery and rejoining work soon,” he said.

Earlier, shoots of Ekta Kapoor’s Kasautii Zindagii Kay and JD Majethia’s Bhakharwadi were halted due to members catching the coronavirus. Parth Samthaan, who plays the lead role in Kasautii Zindagii Kay had tested positive just a few days after shooting activity resumed post lockdown, whereas a Bhakharwadi crew member succumbed to the virus last month.

TV actors including Shrenu Parikh, Satish Shah, and Mohena Kumari among others have also tested positive in the recent past.

While one resumes work, the importance of safety precautions as deemed necessary by the local administration cannot be overstated. We must continue to wear a mask, wash our hands, and maintain social distancing at our end, and take all measures in relation to isolation if tested positive. Our TV and film stars have showcased discipline and responsibility when tested positive, and we must also follow their lead. Wish them a speedy recovery, we need our entertainment back in this rather glum 2020.
