TikTok introduced us to a different avatar of celebs. Who’d think David Warner could dance like a boss and Reitish Deskmukh could finally find his comic timing?
In a surprising move on Monday, the Indian government banned 59 Chinese-made apps that it stated were “prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, the security of the state and public order”. Among the list were TikTok, Shareit, UC Browser, Shein, CamScanner, and Club Factory. Twenty-seven of the 59 apps were among the top 1,000 Android apps in India last month.

Without doubt TikTok was the most popular in the list, with over 119 million users in India. When it was first launched in September 2017, many were quick to dismiss it as a platform for “cringe” videos. But it’s popularity, especially in small-town India, made it impossible to resist. Soon Bollywood celebs and sports persons started chasing TikTok stardom, posting 15-second lip synching videos, dance routines, or comedy sketches. And now with a ban amid the lockdown, it’s going to leave a huge void. Here are five celebs who are definitely going to miss TikTok more than we miss them.
- Neha Kakkar
While the singer has been subject of ridicule and meme-trolling for her song remakes and her stint as a reality show judge, it is on TikTok where she found fame. With 17.2 million followers and over 144.7 million likes, Neha Kakkar is one of the top celebrities on the platform from India. The bubbly singer keeps her fans hooked with fun updates from her life as well as lip-syncing videos. In the TikTok world, she is a total star.

- David Warner
Although TikTok isn’t banned in Australia, a huge part of David Warner’s 4.7 million followers hail from India. Everyone has enjoyed dance routines featuring the Aussie opener, his wife and adorable daughter. The 15-second action-packed dance sequences on popular Bollywood and Telugu songs are such a huge hit that they are also shared on WhatsApp and Facebook.
Our favourite is Warner and his daughter Indi dancing to “Sheila Ki Jawani”.

- Riteish Deshmukh
Riteish Deshmukh’s Bollywood career might not have panned the way he probably wished but he’s found unmatched stardom on TikTok. With 15.9 million followers, the platform is where the Bollywood actor showcased his comedic timing and acting range through hilarious videos. Some of the videos even feature his wife Genelia D’Souza. The adorable couple has found a whole new fanbase.

- Bharti Singh
It’s no surprise that Comedy Queen Bharti Singh commands a huge following on TikTok. She has taken to TikTok, like a fish to water. Posting hilarious lip-sync videos has made her one of the top TikTok stars in India. Occasionally, she also shares videos featuring her husband Haarsh Limbachiyaa. TikTok has been great at encouraging talent like Bharti’s that might not have gotten their due on TV or in films.

Jacqueline Fernandez has been a TikTok revelation. From dance routines to workout videos, makeup tutorials and taking up the latest challenges on the app, the Bollywood actress has been up for it all. No wonder she has amassed over 13.6 million followers with over 84.5 million likes. Her movies might not keep you hooked but her TikTok feed… oh boy, it’s entertainment max.
