{"id":588,"date":"2016-04-01T16:57:33","date_gmt":"2016-04-01T16:57:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/?p=588"},"modified":"2016-04-01T16:57:33","modified_gmt":"2016-04-01T16:57:33","slug":"harry-potter-jk-rowling-fantastic-beasts-and-where-to-find-them-eddie-redmayne","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/?p=588","title":{"rendered":"Fantastic Beasts and How to Screw with Muggles"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span>\n<p><span class=\"dropcap\">A<\/span>s we were about to end our long session in 1920s New York brought to us by JK Rowling with people lining up outside a bakery, my eight-year-old cousin leaned in and whispered, \u201cAre these people also lining up in front of an ATM?\u201d He seemed bored, I was too.\n\n<\/p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I don\u2019t think anyone expected <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to be a great film. It is, after all, helmed by the missionary position of filmmaking, David Yates, but the rather unsubtle attempts to recreate Harry Potter and the overt attempt at playing with nostalgia, was a surprise. From the outset, the foundational text of the protagonist, Newt Scamander, is similar to that of Harry\u2019s: jittery, self-aware, underconfident in conventional social situations. In a Hollywood world where IP is everything, this film is more legacy-quel than a prequel, more fan servicey and box-office oriented than the previous Potter films.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Movies these days are expected to be engines of economic and cultural currency and have to drive expanded universes, merchandise, memes, etc. They\u2019re expected to resonate in all these different ways in our lives and our cultures and that\u2019s the bet Rowling makes with the first <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fantastic Beasts <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">film. It\u2019s not a great film, it\u2019s not supposed to be. It\u2019s meant to divulge just enough for you to come watch the next four. Welcome to the world of film-baiting, Warner Brother Style. (Side note: Warner Brothers lost the Harry Potter series and Christopher Nolan\u2019s Batman movies in 2012 and is\u00a0trying to revive both brands.)<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Milking an invaluable IP like Harry Potter, is an art, and Rowling, who has tried to use the Potterverse to print more money (Look up <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pottermore.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pottermore<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harry Potter and The Cursed Child<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), uses <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fantastic Beasts<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to set up the four upcoming (Welp!) films in the series, by name-dropping the premier Potter characters on the intriguing scale every 20 minutes \u2013 a slight mention of Dumbledore here, Newt\u2019s apparent relationship with a Leda Lestrange who could be Bellatrix\u2019s mother, the moment where Newt says, \u201cI want the quiet life for me\u201d, and more. Rowling, once again, unabashedly proves that she knows the way to her fans heartstrings better than anyone.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her fans, mostly born between 1985 to 1995, people who breathed Potter, are reaching that mid-20s to early-30s phase where the desire to go back becomes irresistible. They remember, like I do, a simpler time when the concept of happiness entailed standing outside a book store in Connaught Place early morning to get my copy, run back home, and binge read it that day so no one at school spoils it. <\/span>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">Whatever her intention may be, it kind of works in a twisted, guilty pleasure way.<\/blockquote>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of nostalgia, Milan Kundera once said, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Greek word for \u2018return\u2019 is nostos. Algos means \u2018suffering\u2019. So nostalgia is the suffering caused by an unappeased yearning to return.\u201d\u00a0And make no mistake, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fantastic Beasts<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is suffering. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But still I watched the film. Because I\u2019m not ready to let go. When the Potter books finished with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deathly Hallows<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Harry Potter\u2019s story ended but not everyone else\u2019s. Heck we didn\u2019t even get their beginnings. I remember talking to countless fellow Potterheads about narrative restrictions because of the story revolving around Harry and how that left many unexplored stories in that universe, and how we weren\u2019t ready to leave it behind.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Albus Dumbledore\u2019s rise and his relationship with <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/2016\/11\/18\/harry-potter-fantastic-beasts-grindelwald-history\/#0wFVXC5goqqu\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grindelwald<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Grindelwald himself who was essentially Voldemort before Voldemort, the full curve of the rise of the dark side, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pottermore.com\/features\/who-are-the-sacred-twenty-eight\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sacred Twenty-Eight,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the makings of Bellatrix, Severus Snape after he finished school and joined the Death Eaters, how on a basic level the wizarding community functioned before Voldemort broke it into two, and everything about Dobby, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pottermore.com\/explore-the-story\/nymphadora-tonks\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nymphadora Tonks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and countless others, in addition to the politics of adulting in the wizarding world, left everything to the imagination. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rowling gets this, hence the continuous efforts to monetise and get back. Perhaps, she herself isn\u2019t ready to let go. Whatever her intention may be, it kind of works in a twisted, guilty pleasure way. Her Potter books changed language and the way a generation made references for a decade; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fantastic Beasts <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intends to do just that, as we move into a different part of our lives. The characters are older, the problems are samefferent and muggles are no-majs.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is the movie good? No, but it does enough to put you in that space again, to take you back when you were restless and easily excitable and checked out clouds and threw things just to see them fall down. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fantastic Beasts And Where to Find Them<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an exercise in how art and advertising screw with emotions, and an example of how we fall for it every time. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, as much I hate admitting it, I think I\u2019m going to rise to the bait again. Unless, of course, I\u2019m <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/harrypotter.wikia.com\/wiki\/Memory_Charm\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">obliviated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:
