Before the Indian government <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2009\/feb\/22\/india-protect-traditional-medicines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cracked down in 2009<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there was a period when American companies tried to patent the supposedly brand-new health benefits of kitchen staples like turmeric and ginger. The US market for probiotics \u2013 the good gut bacteria that can be found in every Indian household\u2019s dahi handi \u2013 is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketsandmarkets.com\/PressReleases\/probiotics.asp\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">projected<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be worth a whopping $69.3 billion by 2023. Of course, there\u2019s the mass adoption of yoga in all its forms and abominations, including beer yoga and yoga with alpacas. Going by their dedication, you\u2019d be forgiven if you believed that this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/modern-family\/my-sisters-and-i-cremated-our-father-every-daughter-must-be-part-of-their-parents-final-journey\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spiritual<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> discipline was invented by white people a few years ago, and not by our own PM Modi. And who can forget the time a Harvard epidemiologist stigmatised our beloved coconut oil as being \u201cpure poison?\u201d<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given these betrayals, we probably should have expected this latest study presented at the European Congress of Obesity in Glasgow earlier this week. A research team from Kyoto found that increasing rice consumption by 50 grams per day \u2013 about three-quarters of a cup \u2013 could reduce global <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/a-love-letter-to-my-big-fat-body\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">obesity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by one full percentage point. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professor Tomoko Imai who led the research, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-04-30\/eating-more-rice-could-help-fight-obesity-study-suggests\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cThe observed associations suggest that the obesity rate is low in countries that eat rice as a staple food.\u201d And the ironically named chairman of the UK\u2019s National Obesity Forum, Tam Fry, claimed: \u201cWe have known that far eastern populations tend to be slimmer than in the west because rice is a staple food.\u201d<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re left scratching your head at this point, you\u2019re not alone. For decades, common wisdom in India has dictated that dieters should steer clear of the starchy staple. As for slender, rice-guzzling far easterners? I\u2019d like to extend an invitation to the Japanese researchers to observe these specimens in their natural habitat <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/culture\/tam-brahm-weddings-the-holy-union-of-boredom-and-bananas\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tamil Nadu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with love. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Much of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/culture\/why-the-insipid-you-can-never-match-the-intimacy-of-hindi-pronouns\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> eats rice for three meals a day, with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/northeast-discrimination-assam-india\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manipur<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> coming in as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/scroll.in\/article\/670473\/rice-and-wheat-maps-of-india-rajasthan-doesnt-eat-rice-rotis-a-rarity-in-manipur\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">top<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> consumer. But few can compare to the sadam-loving Tamilian, whose fondness for a good puliyodharai with a side of thayir-appalam is immortalised by his bulging belly. The cosy South Indian paunch is a trademark style of the state, and no lungi is complete without the gentle swell of a rice-stuffed stomach over it, testing the buttons of the modest shirt. Nor can you pull off a Madisar nine-yard sari like a true TamBrahm <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/soni-razdan-yours-truly-middle-aged-actresses-alia-bhatt\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">maami<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> unless you have a belly roll or two to hold it all in place.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clearly, the Tamilian rice belly doesn\u2019t discriminate based on gender, or even location. From Kanchipuram to Kuala Lumpur, it endures, and when paired with a bushy moustache, acts as a distinctive marker of South Indian-dom. A scenic safari through Matunga will reveal dozens of balloon bellies loitering outside Udupi cafes, sagging with the accumulated weight of a thousand idlis. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even legendary Sri Lankan Tamil spin bowler Muttiah Muralitharan is known as much for his decidedly unathletic silhouette as his absurd wicket-taking records. How this cute, pudgy man with a Level 3 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/fought-patriarchy-voting-candidate\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uncle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> potbelly managed to be the deadliest bowler in Test cricket history remains one of the great mysteries of our time. But you won\u2019t be finding obesity researchers from Kyoto trying to explain that. <\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p>I\u2019d like to extend an invitation to the Japanese researchers to observe these specimens in their natural habitat \u2013 from Tamil Nadu, with love. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Murali achieved his splendid Buddhaesque form, however, is no secret <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not to the millions of Tamilians who genuinely consider variety rice to be a cuisine all on its own. It appears this is a far cry from Prof Imai\u2019s idea of a healthy Eastern diet based on rice, as the study\u2019s 50 gram recommendation would barely qualify as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/satire\/moon-moon-sen-is-every-bengali-without-bed-tea\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breakfast<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a four-year-old Tamilian.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A single glance at a typical South Indian diet would challenge the good professor\u2019s assumption that the fibre found in rice guards against overeating, but would certainly support the idea that eating <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/grub\/rice-biryani-delhi-india-food\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be correlated with good health. Keralites, who are close cousins of Tamilians in terms of rice consumption, have the highest life expectancy in all of India, and the other southern states are well clear of the national average. Sure, you can chalk it all up to better development and medical infrastructure and unimportant deets like that.
