Besides the star-studded <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kalank<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that bombed unceremoniously after its opening weekend, April has hardly witnessed any releases. Of course, that could be because most of the year\u2019s big outings so far had already been scheduled in the run-up to the general elections. Whether it was top-grosser <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uri: The Surgical Strike<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or costume dramas <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kesari <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manikarnika: Queen of Jhansi<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the tone of Bollywood in 2019 has, thus far, struck a unanimous and loud patriotic note. Then there was that one \u201cnon-political\u201d biopic on PM Modi that was refused release by the Election Commission, over concerns that it was election propaganda.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that campaigning is over and elections results are barely a month away, perhaps the political agenda that has ruled the first quarter in Bollywood year will cool off. But it\u2019s bound to be temporary. Segueing neatly into a recent trend of hagiographies posing as biopics, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/john-mathew-matthan-sarfarosh-kargil-war\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">patriotic movies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> now focus on lionising their subjects, elevating them beyond the reach of reality. Just look at the trailer for the postponed biopic of PM Modi, for example. Similarly, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uri<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has come under fire for glorifying the hardships soldiers face during war, and aggrandising a real-life surgical strike. Politics, military, and the movies have become so intertwined that it\u2019s hard to imagine going back to the days when patriotic films like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rang De Basanti <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My Name Is Khan<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 with their messages of democratic freedom and anti-Islamophobia \u2014 were superhits. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Few films seem further from this cinemascape of chest-thumping nationalism than 2004\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Main Hoon Na<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which celebrates its 15th anniversary this week. Notable both for being Farah Khan\u2019s directorial debut and a movie where Shah Rukh Khan plays a character his own age, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Main Hoon Na<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a lighthearted <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/yeti-abominable-snowman-himalaya-bigfoot\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">military<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> film about a cross-border peace operation, now serves to map the shift in the Indian cultural narrative across a generation. Could you possibly make a feel-good masala flick about border tensions today?<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, a quick refresher for those who\u2019ve managed to forget the film that the BBC <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/films\/2004\/04\/28\/main_hoon_na_2004_review.shtml\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">described<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it as a \u201cbonkers masala movie\u2026 the mutant offspring of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grease<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Matrix<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d In the film, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/kaushal-khurrana-where-does-shah-rukh-khan-stand\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SRK\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Major Ram Prasad Sharma is a para-commando tasked with protecting college student Sanjana Bakshi (Amrita Rao), the daughter of a military general who is involved with Project Milaap. Naturally, Ram goes undercover as a fellow student. It\u2019s evident that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Main Hoon Na<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> takes place at a time when Indo-Pak relations aren\u2019t strained, as Milaap is a prisoner exchange programme between the countries. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The villain of the film is former Capt. Raghavan Singh Dutta, played by Suniel Shetty in a truly iconic wig. The captain was court martialled when he, paranoid about cross-border spies, started murdering Pakistanis at random, and he is hell-bent on stopping Project Milaap \u2014 even going so far as to infiltrate the college in the guise of a professor. In between being Sanjana\u2019s secret bodyguard, befriending his estranged half-brother Lucky (Zayed Khan), and ensuring that everyone ends the film appropriately <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/culture\/half-girlfriend-complete-moron-the-anatomy-of-a-chetan-bhagat-heroine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coupled<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> up, Ram also stops the treacherous professor who has held the entire college hostage, in an unhinged helicopter action sequence on the roof. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s no denying that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Main Hoon Na<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> served up masala at its best and freshest, and the film proved it by smashing box office records of its day. It quickly became the quintessential college movie for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/bollywood-2017-nostalgia-90s-comeback\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201990s kids<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> thanks to Sanjana\u2019s bucket hats and raccoon-inspired kajal, Sushmita Sen\u2019s appearance as a sexy teacher, and a nostalgia-laden title track. Plus, it delivered all the satisfaction of a Bollywood family drama, kicking off with a father\u2019s dying wish that his sons, the illegitimate Ram and the rebel Lucky (real name Laxman, obv), be united \u2014 right alongside a fight scene that involves SRK flying through the air on a bike, gripping a single handlebar while shooting at the villainous Dutta. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that we\u2019ve seen gritty, high-stakes action in films like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/series\/first-person\/surgical-strike-pakistan-india-war-uri-loc-indian-army\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uri<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kesari<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Main Hoon Na<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s whimsical portrayal of a military operation seems awfully quaint, even idiotic. While Major Ram is still the hero, Dutta \u2013 who is jingoistic, bigoted, and violent \u2013 poses a threat to the fragile Indo-Pak peace. He is a cautionary tale of nationalism gone wrong, a disgrace to the uniform that represents India. <\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p>He is a cautionary tale of nationalism gone wrong, a disgrace to the uniform that represents India. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Main Hoon Na<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> concludes with an emotional scene of prisoners crossing the border, and the promise of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/politics\/pulwama-pakistan-uri-india-narendra-modi-crpf\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">harmony<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the subcontinent \u2014 a scene that seems impossible today. It frames Ram and Lucky\u2019s complicated brotherhood as a metaphor for the relationship between two countries that used to be one. To advocate for that fraternity now is to invite labels of \u201canti-national\u201d and protests outside cinema halls. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clearly, the definition of patriotism, and of patriotic films, has changed in the 15 years since <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Main Hoon Na<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uri<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, far from being just a movie, has become a movement, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/hrishikesh-mukherjees-gol-maal\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">national mood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> captured by the campaign slogan-worthy dialogue: \u201cHow\u2019s the josh?\u201d Despite Farah Khan\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.news18.com\/news\/movies\/farah-khan-says-she-has-a-good-idea-for-main-hoon-nas-sequel-2123079.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hints<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of a<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sequel, the magic of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Main Hoon Na <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can\u2019t be made again \u2014 not if it has to live up to the nationalistic standards of modern Bollywood. <\/span>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Few films seem further from today\u2019s cinemascape of chest-thumping nationalism than the 2004 film Main Hoon Na.
