Her decision betrays the wishes of her jaded father-in-law, whose past is marked by the loss of a son owing to the negligence of one such hospital. \u201cI don\u2019t want to lose my grandson as well,\u201d the old man offers at the beginning of the episode, scoffing at the mere idea of depending on the country\u2019s healthcare system. So, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/modern-family\/family-tv-time-binge-watching-tv-shows\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">family<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> continues putting the boy\u2019s life on the line by subscribing to the village\u2019s unspoken medical code: Relying on superstition and the local quack for cure. What is even more remarkable \u2013 and devastating \u2013 is how the writers contextualise the texture of the distrust that rural India harbours against the country\u2019s medical system: For these villagers, even going to the hospital is both an act of rebellion and a lost cause. The boy\u2019s life is cheap, and it isn\u2019t an exception \u2013 his cursed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/culture\/library-e-books-social-media-nostalgia\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is afterall, the story of one in a million. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s this thread that informs the narrative of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laakhon Mein Ek\u2019s <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">impeccably crafted second season, which underlines the dissonance between <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/why-kunal-kamras-bold-satire-stands-out-in-the-age-of-bollywoods-apolitical-stars\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">democratic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mechanisms that are meant to serve the public and their actual capability of being saviours. Created by comedian Biswa Kalyan Rath and co-written by Rath, Hussain Haidry, and Abhishek Sengupta (who also serves as the director), the new season of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laakhon Mein Ek<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> comes across as a rarity in the Indian landscape of fiction series. For it refuses to drag season one\u2019s immensely resonant storyline \u2013 a searing commentary on the ruthlessness of India\u2019s blinkered education system \u2013 to inspire the second season. In doing so, the series effectively strays away from limiting its vision; instead, it crafts a completely new universe that acts as a companion piece and not a middling sequel.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a move that guarantees that the new season of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laakhon Mein Ek<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has the freedom to adapt life itself: The tightly edited eight-episode series (probably the only recent show whose plot doesn\u2019t feel like it overstays its welcome) follows Dr Shreya Pathare (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/gone-kesh-review-a-bold-subject-cut-short-by-a-receding-storyline\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shweta Tripathi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), a sincere junior doctor who is learning the ropes at a modest district hospital. Soon, an accidental breach of boundaries leads to Shreya being chosen to organise a cataract camp in Sitlapur, a sleepy Maharashtrian village. But because her one-month assignment exists to primarily fulfill vapid electoral promises, it becomes both a responsibility and a punishment. The makers underline Shreya&#8217;s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/sports\/virat-kohli-rcb-captain-ipl-2019\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">predicament<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with clever montages that lend purpose to her routine domesticity, whether it is her uncomplicated craving for the canteen samosa and pakora or her uncensored nightly rants.\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tripathi, an evocative actress \u2013 consistently misspent in roles that do little justice to her talent \u2013 brings out this dichotomy through her informed body language. From the minute she reaches Sitlapur \u2013 wearing a saree, no less \u2013 Shreya remains aware of the battles she can afford to pick: Despite her throroughness as a doctor, she instinctively lowers her eyes while facing the villagers or her male senior, as if resigned to the fact that her idealism will inevitably have to take a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/modern-family\/indian-parents-backseat-driving\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">backseat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And in the latter half of the show, the actress contrasts that hesitation with a brand of aggression that most women who are routinely taken less seriously than men in their profession often internalise. And yet, she feels like a female protagonist who isn\u2019t curated to just make a grand statement, for even the gendered specificity of her conflicts \u2013 like worrying about a clean washroom \u2013 is rooted to reality.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just like the rookie Newton Kumar in Amit Masurkar\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Newton<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Shreya, the show\u2019s proverbial underdog, operates on the assumption that her idealism can counter the constraints of reality. And like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Newton<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, even the show is concerned with highlighting the distance between an underdog and a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/why-are-we-not-outraging-over-the-pollachi-sex-abuse-scandal\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">victim<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet where<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Laakhon Mein Ek<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> differs from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Newton<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is that it doesn\u2019t outrightly villianise the flawed system. One of the show\u2019s strongest tracks is its articulation of \u201chartal\u201d as a weapon that rescues and destructs: On one hand, a CMO effectively threatens the health <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/the-accidental-prime-minister-review\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">minister<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with a potential doctor\u2019s strike to bargain for medical supplies and on the other hand, Ishwar, a medical supplier loses out on his contract by daring to call a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/uncategorized\/burger-singh-air-strike-india-pakistan\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strike<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s proof of the show\u2019s intelligence that none of its compelling excursions into the limitations of governmental healthcare \u2013 the shortage of staff and medical supplies, a thriving black market, political interference, or the disinterested bureaucracy \u2013 suffer from generalisations. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, on more than one occasion, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laakhon Mein Ek <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feels like it slyly foreshadows the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/india-news\/up-30-dead-in-48-hours-due-to-disruption-of-oxygen-supply-in-gorakhpur-hospital\/story-TwMrMJxhAZzIkn3pXcZEMN.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gorakhpur tragedy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, given that its makers remain invested in examining the origins of a complete systemic breakdown. The show is then, at its strongest when it examines how the fallout of even one of the components in a system creates an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/omung-kumra-director-pm-narendra-modi-elections-vivek-oberoi\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">irreversible<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ripple effect that affects the others: For instance, Ishwar\u2019s decision to not supply medicines to the cataract camp until he receives an advance payment leads to a godown that is stocked with medical supplies reaching their expiry date and simultaneously parallels Shreya&#8217;s reliance on the black market.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is in these moments <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laakhon Mein Ek<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> surpasses expectations of being merely a rousing character study of an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/mary-poppins-returns-review-a-whimsical-critique-of-the-big-bad-adult-world\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> heroic underdog<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> revolting against a system. Instead, <em>Laakhon Mein Ek<\/em> enlivens its settings by becoming a cautionary portrait of an inherently unreliable system.
