{"id":4458,"date":"2016-03-21T03:50:05","date_gmt":"2016-03-20T22:20:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/?p=4458"},"modified":"2026-07-17T21:05:12","modified_gmt":"2026-07-17T15:35:12","slug":"romeo-akbar-walter-review-john-abraham-robbie-grewal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/?p=4458","title":{"rendered":"Romeo Akbar Walter (RAW) Review: A Spy Thriller that Has as Much Suspense As a Delhi Capitals IPL Match"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"container page-content\"><p><span class=\"dropcap\">A<\/span><\/p><\/div><p>fter last year\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Satyameve Jayate <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parmanu<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Robbie Grewal\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Romeo Akbar Walter, aka RAW<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/satire\/force-2-john-abraham-pakistan-india-uri-surgical-strikes-indian-army\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John Abraham<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s latest effort in proving to the world that he is basically Akshay Kumar with cheekbones. Like his two previous films, even <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Romeo Akbar Walter <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">falls under what I like to call the \u201cbharat mata ki jai\u201d genre of filmmaking and what Kumar probably calls \u201ccardio\u201d. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this borefest set in 1971, Abraham plays Rehmatulla Ali aka Romeo, a bank teller who gets recruited by Srikanth Rai (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/jackie-shroff-gully-boy-hero-karma\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jackie Shroff <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), the chief of the Research and Analysis Wing to operate as an undercover agent in West Pakistan. The brief for his spy mission is simple: Cross the border, wear more kohl than Varun Dhawan in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kalaank<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to blend in, and pass intel that gives India an upper hand in liberating East Pakistan. Romeo manages to do all of this by just changing his name twice, giving his wardrobe a sudden makeover, changing his hairstyle thrice, and growing a beard. Clearly, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Romeo Akbar Walter<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> isn\u2019t a film. It\u2019s a fancy-dress competition. <\/span>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1554447594.jpg\" alt=\"raw\" width=\"786\" height=\"351\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-47742\" \/>\n<figcaption>\n<p>Abraham, a tremendously limited actor, plays his own wax statue in the movie.<\/p>\n<p>Image Credits: Viacom18 Motion Pictures<\/p>\n<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Romeo enters Pakistan as Akbar Malik and joins the staff of a hotel in Pakistan occupied Kashmir. He then earns the trust of arms supplier, Isaq Afridi, who has close ties with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/satire\/india-pakistan-arnab-goswami-pulwama-balakot\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pakistan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Army. And in barely three months, manages to rise through the ranks and become Afridi\u2019s right-hand man, privy to all crucial information that he dutifully passes on to India. For a film that is about a spy who is supposed to be racing against the clock with his life under constant threat, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Romeo Akbar Walter<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has as much suspense as every IPL match played by Delhi Capitals. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On paper, Akbar is supposed to be a Muslim Indian spy in Pakistan, so you\u2019d expect him to be all kinds of secretive. Except, Akbar, a really incompetent spy, spends all his energies and time in trying to get caught: He freely discusses his plans in public settings, reads secret messages tucked inside <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/quit-cigarettes-smoker-withdrawal\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cigarettes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and oranges in open markets, and remains blissfully unaware about Colonel Khan (Sikander Khan having fun) tapping all his phone calls. Abraham, a tremendously limited actor, plays his own wax statue in the movie. Such is his dedication to method inacting, that even a kissing scene isn\u2019t enough to stop him from glaring with all the intensity of a mad cow.<\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p>The movie has a total of one chase scene, and even that is so inept that it\u2019ll make you believe that apart from losing cricket matches and wars, Pakistanis also can\u2019t run.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet the funniest part of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Romeo Akbar Walter<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s predictably boring script is Grewal assuming that the plot is just way too smart for Indian audiences. So he takes it upon himself to spoon feed every little twist in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/satire\/movie-planned-on-pm-modis-trips-abroad\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">movie<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. After every big reveal, characters sit around and explain that information in excruciating detail and then they go ahead and repeat it once again, in case you succeeded in tuning them out before. And, then there are the unrealistic plot twists that just conveniently unfold without any explanation. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Colonel Khan takes Akbar in his custody and gives him a polygraph test to confirm that he is an Indian <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/politics\/punjab-elections-india-pakistan-salman-khan-aap-aam-admi-party-akali-dal-james-bond-dadwan\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Akbar lies through his teeth, but also passes the test. It\u2019s only once he is let go after being tortured that a flashback informs us that Rai had already envisioned such a situation and taught him this trick before he left for Pakistan.<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Romeo Akbar Walter\u2019<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s commitment to logic can then be best summed up in a scene when someone expresses his surprise at the turn of events and asks \u201cHow did this happen?\u201d. All he is told is \u201cMagic\u201d. From time to time, the protagonists in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Romeo Akbar Walter<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also seem to forget that it is an espionage thriller and spend way too much talking and very little time in chasing each other. The movie has a total of one chase scene, and even that is so inept that it\u2019ll make you believe that apart from losing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/sports\/why-we-should-all-mourn-the-decline-of-australian-cricket\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cricket<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> matches and wars, Pakistanis also can\u2019t run. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patriotism is arguably the easiest emotion to conjure at a time when Indians are waiting to display their josh and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Romeo Akbar<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Walter is so brainless that it can\u2019t even figure out the key to that. As a result, the movie that runs for a stretched 144 minutes, has at least three different climaxes and neither is compelling to be taken seriously. Afterall, there\u2019s only so much you can expect from a film whose biggest twist rests on Jackie Shroff having a \u201ctip tip barsa pani\u201d moment and which is convinced that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/politics\/pulwama-kashmir-terrorist-attack-congress-bjp-unite\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pakistan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> never had a sunny day in 1971.<\/span>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the borefest set in 1971 called Romeo Akbar Walter, John Abraham plays a RAW spy.
