{"id":3689,"date":"2016-06-17T04:12:48","date_gmt":"2016-06-16T22:42:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/?p=3689"},"modified":"2016-06-17T04:12:48","modified_gmt":"2016-06-16T22:42:48","slug":"how-to-survive-as-a-sugar-conscious-gujarati","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/?p=3689","title":{"rendered":"Sweet Nothings: How to Survive as a Sugar-Conscious Gujarati"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"container page-content\"><p><span class=\"dropcap\">E<\/span><\/p><\/div><p> \n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">very <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/grub\/gujaratis-despise-non-vegetarians-and-support-vegetarian-food-habits\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gujarati<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> wedding menu has two kinds of dal; there\u2019s \u201cnormal\u201d dal and then there\u2019s meethi dal<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first bland and boring version is for the six people at the wedding who are fitness conscious and are obviously not Gujarati, and the latter is for the rest of us who will die of diabetes. Then there\u2019s sweet kadhi<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sev tameta nu shaak, and basundi \u2013 all this even before you reach the dessert counter \u2013 for the sugar rush we need to dance to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/gujarat-family-festivals-garba-religion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSanedo\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> later. They say some stereotypes exist because they are true, and this is certainly true for us Gujaratis. We love sweet food, truly madly deeply. \u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You could say Gujjus are as obsessed with sweet food as paps and admins of dank meme pages are with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/taimur-ali-khan-saif-ali-khan-kareena-kapoor-childrens-day-gift-jeep-reporting-page3-glamour\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taimur Ali Khan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In a Gujarati household, the sugar jar is placed right next to the salt jar, and used as liberally as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/sports\/virat-kohli-indian-cricket-team-india-pakistan-anushka-sharma-arnab-goswami\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Virat Kohli<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> uses expletives on the field. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can live without water but not sugar and jaggery, especially in places where the rest of the world thinks they have no business being. We like our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/grub\/pizza-samosa-cheese-recipe\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pizza<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with more ketchup than toppings \u2013 in fact, the sweet tang of ketchup makes everything from dal chawal to hakka noodles to falafel better. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For breakfast, we either have bread with layers of jam or roti, or a side of gud<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lunch is always followed by sweet chaas or sweet lassi. At dinner, we have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/grub\/soan-papdi-homage-to-the-nice-guy-of-diwali-mithais\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mithai <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with food and then have ice cream an hour later for dessert. Post that, we have a meetha paan as the closing act and follow it with some sugary saunf. Our meals and drinks come in size XL but our taste is always an S (sweet).<\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p>I don\u2019t know how my family will cope with this new-fangled \u2013 ok, old-fangled \u2013 idea of how sugar is the biggest, hidden villain in the culinary world. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But now, in an age where people have quinoa cake or avocado chocolate pudding for dessert, it\u2019s not easy for us sugar-loving Gujjus to survive without judgment. At work, when I pour two entire packets of sugar into my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/arranged-marriage-coffee-date\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coffee<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, my colleagues give me the death stare generally reserved for those who defend <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/music\/narendra-modi-india-2016-2017-demonetisation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">demonetisation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But can you really blame me? In our house, black coffee is treated like a medicine to cure stomach issues and the non-Gujarati cook who forgets to add sweet to undhiyu is promptly fired. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I don\u2019t know how my family will cope with this new-fangled \u2013 ok, old-fangled \u2013 idea of how sugar is the biggest, hidden villain in the culinary world. Because my fam doesn\u2019t think that we use too much sugar; it passionately believes that the rest of the world uses too little. \u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it may appear that we snort sugar instead of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/first-person\/cocaine-trip-experience\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cocaine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the reason for excessive use of sugar and jaggery in food is the kharo paani (salty groundwater) in Gujarat that made the food taste awful. Our ancestors used the sweetners to make food palatable and today, even as the situation has changed radically, our food habits haven\u2019t kept up. Gujaratis might be one of the most successful entrepreneurial communities in the world \u2013 shoutout to my peeps at Antilia \u2013 but our food still reflects a slightly primal urge. And it is impossible for us to keep up with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/grub\/dieting-veganism-fads-instagram\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health consciousness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the modern world. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, in a Gujarati family, along with a ghar and family \u201cbijness\u201d, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/grub\/world-diabetes-day-indian-celebrations-sweet-delicacies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is passed on from one generation to another. My grandparents suffered from diabetes and my parents are carrying forward the glorious tradition. I often wonder that if I become conscious about my sugar intake, will I let them down? <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, at the risk of being disowned, I\u2019ve started to be a little more conscious these days. Each time my mom reaches for the extra-large dabba of sugar in the supermarket, I keep it back and pick the small one. And every time dad heads to the sweet counter at a shaadi before his meal, I distract him. Next on my agenda, is to convince them that pizza tastes just as nice even without ketchup. I may be successful in this endeavour or I might end up with diabetes \u2013 either way, I\u2019ll have made a dent in this vestigial instinct.
