Ramu, who recently went \u201cfull retard\u201d with <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guns and Thighs<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/satire\/inside-the-mind-of-ram-gopal-varma\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">God, Sex, and Truth<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> once gave us gems like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ab Tak Chappan<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Company<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Sarkar I.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> But before all of this \u2013 and the reason we can forgive him for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RGV Ki Aag<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sarkaar 3<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 is the OG <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/people\/the-seat-mafia-of-mumbai-locals\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mumbai mafia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> movie,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Satya<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The film turns 22 today. <\/span>\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/mumbai-bombay-india-shivaji-maharaj-shiv-sena-thane-haji-ali-mughal-empire-tom-hanks-kala-ghoda\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mumbai\u2019s status<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as the country\u2019s financial and entertainment capital makes it ground zero for crime, but rarely does a movie do justice to this fabulous <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/vice\/sex-on-a-shoestring-budget\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seedy side<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the city. Suckered in by the possibility of untold riches, with dreams that are chambered to a .45 , young men still flock to the land of opportunity, like moths to a flame. Their meeting with the inevitable facilitated by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/series\/aarushi\/aarushi-talwar-nupur-rajesh-noida-murder\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">khaki-clad grim reaper<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been romanticised countless times in books and film. But none has managed to capture the grittiness in all it\u2019s gory glory better than <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Satya<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The mafia milieu perfectly captured by its motley crew of characters that represent the \u201990s, a period of time in Mumbai\u2019s mythology when the city was in the throes of a passionate yet violent, torrid affair with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/series\/first-person\/confessions-of-a-spa-therapist\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shady men<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with guns, on both sides of the law.<\/span>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">Crime films need characters, not caricatures, they need real grime, not artistically recreated versions of it.<\/blockquote>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Satya<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the story of a nobody, played by JD Chakravarthy, who along with millions of others like him, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/series\/invisibles\/dhanteras-diwali-gold-mumbai-ghamelawallah-gold-hunt\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">moved to Mumbai willing to do whatever it takes to make it in this city.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Cliche? Yes. But what turns this cliche on its head is Chakravarthy, who is distant, almost indifferent to the mire that surrounds him. You think you\u2019ve seen the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/people\/guru-dutt-pyaasa-kaagaz-ke-phool-india-allahabad-love\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brooding leading man<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? Well you haven\u2019t until you\u2019ve watched Chakravarthy as Satya. His face locked in a perpetual <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/ranbir-kapoor-birthday-actor-bollywood\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201clost boy\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gaze as he strikes out by himself, to make a living using honest means. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can see shades of Chakravarthy all around Mumbai: He could be the quiet, slightly timid <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/people\/uber-ola-taxi-strike\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uber driver<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who informs you that it\u2019s his first day on the job while you pretend to give a shit about anything outside your little bubble. He\u2019s not the modern-day cliche of the many overtly badass gangster films Bollywood has attempted to make, where <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/bollywood-pahlaj-nihalani-emraan-hashmi-kissing-romance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emraan Hashmi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> always seems to have a smart, crowd-pleasing one-liner before dispatching an opponent.<\/span>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-36399\" src=\"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1530619367.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"152\" \/><figcaption>He (Chakravarthy) remains understated, straight-faced, emotionless, and you can\u2019t tell whether he\u2019d piss his pants or walk out unscathed of a firefight.\nImage credit: RGV Pictures<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chakravarthy is nothing like Hashmi. He remains understated, straight-faced, emotionless, and you can\u2019t tell whether he\u2019d piss his pants or walk out unscathed of a firefight, leaving a bunch of dead bodies and debris in his wake. He starts off as a waiter at a beer bar where he encounters a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/monsoons-india-tourists-maharashtra-waterfalls-vip\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sub-species of Mumbai\u2019s populace<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Local \u201cshaane log\u201d or pawns of the mafia, who\u2019ve sworn fealty to whichever gangster holds sway in their locality and who do what pawns to best, become cannon fodder. Running afoul of these gentlemen Satya is taught a lesson and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/people\/india-uttar-pradesh-up-prison-jail-charas-drugs-narcotics-bahraich-child-welfare\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">winds up in jail<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the process, then retaliates by killing the man responsible after being released. It is in jail that he meets the only other reason to watch this movie, Bhiku Mhatre, who goes on to become his friend, mentor and boss when he introduces him to the ballet of bullets that is the underworld. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bhiku is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/marathi-manoos-mns-multiplex\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">archetype of the Marathi manoos<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he still lives in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/middle-class-sex-life-fetish\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chawl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with his typically Marathi wife. He\u2019s got the typically <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/series\/true-crime\/scam-ponzi-scheme-mumbai-india-con-he-got-scammed\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">skewed moral compass that guides the middle-class in Mumbai to it\u2019s true north, money<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Bhiku, the man who would be king, makes his intentions clear while posing a rhetorical question out to the sea, \u201cMumbai ka king kaun?\u201d. \u201cBhiku Mhatre,\u201d says Manoj Bajpayee whose role in Satya eclipses his now-cult role as Sardar Khan in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gangs of Wasseypur<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the sea could speak, it\u2019d probably tell Bhiku that he wasn\u2019t the first to harbour such delusions of grandeur and he certainly wouldn\u2019t be the last. In stark contrast to our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/series\/true-crime\/davinder-bambiha-sharp-shooter-punjab-drugs-crime-gangster-instagram-facebook\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">modern day mafiosos<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who carry themselves with grace and style, Bhiku is the wandering vagabond. He dresses like he\u2019s just come back from a Ganpati visarjan or a dingy dance bar, belying the fact that he was indeed a feared crime boss, who started off as a lowly underling. While his cinematic counterparts choose to upgrade their lifestyles, Bhiku chose not to. While millennial gangster films set in the same period have the boss being driven around in a Mercedes or something similar, Bhiku\u2019s mode of transport is the Padmini Premier or the Omni, the workhorse of the middle class. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alongwith his associates, comprising the multifaceted Makarand Deshpande and Saurabh Shukla, who play Advocate Chandrakant and Kallu Mama respectively, Bhiku and his bunch of merry madarchods set out to grab their piece of the pie. Willing to kill for what\u2019s theirs and set themselves up as the lords of the land, backed up by the powerful Bhau, or the Don Corleone to Bhiku\u2019s Santino and Chakravarthy\u2019s would be Michael. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even Urmila Matondkar, who plays Satya\u2019s love interest Vidya, is neither mother nor moll as is the norm. She\u2019s a poor singer trying to hack it in the big bad world of the 90s when playback singers, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/series\/true-crime\/gangster-bandookbaaz-true-crime-chota-shakeel-india\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gangsters, cops and politicians<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were all willing participants in this crime orgy. If this premise were played out today, Urmila might probably have been cast as a dancer who shakes her bosom in a backroom until she is \u201crescued\u201d by the anti hero. In this way again, Satya was before its time, because Vidya and Satya come together on their own terms, independent of each other, each with their own baggage that neither wants the other\u2019s help to carry. \u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s climactic finish, set in the rains during Ganesh Chaturthi, is as Mumbai as Mumbai gets. There\u2019s no <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/golmaal-again-movie-review-rohit-shetty-ajay-devgn-tusshar-kapoor-kunal-khemu-tabu-parineeti-chopra\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">swish action choreography<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with gunfights featuring people flying through the air, there\u2019s coup de grace with dialogue that is smart for smart\u2019s sake, and there sure as hell are no big explosions and brouhaha as the antagonist and the proto-antagonist square off. There\u2019s just Mumbai, veiled in it\u2019s damp grey shroud.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crime films need you to see the muck smeared on the sides of cars that have ferried crime bosses to silent meetings. They need the grit that comes from using the red hue of a dimly lit bar or whorehouse as the setting for illicit deals with different devils and not as the background for item numbers. Crime films need characters, not caricatures, they need real grime, not artistically recreated versions of it.
