The bodies of the girl, aged 8 and 12 were found with eye injuries from the pond late Monday evening, ASP Rajesh Kumar told news agency PTI. Police said that the girls had gone to the fields in the afternoon to get vegetables but didn’t return. Police stated that the bodies were sent for a post mortem and a report on the same is awaited.Family members of the minors have alleged that “the attackers killed the girls after an unsuccessful attempt to rape them,” the officer said. “The bodies were lying near a pond. Their legs were tied,” the victims’ father said. “We do not have any enmity with anyone in the village. Why would anyone kill my daughters and that too in such a gruesome manner?”

In a separate incident in Bulandshahr district, a 15-year-old died of burn injuries, three months after she was raped. A relative and two friends of the accused – who is in jail – were arrested after the teenager’s father alleged that they set her on fire, the police said.
A video shot at the hospital where the girl was first brought has the woman saying she set herself on fire after threats from the family of the rape accused. However, the FIR filed by the woman’s father alleges that the rape accused’s family poured petrol on the woman and set her on fire. “A fair investigation will be conducted. For now, three people have been arrested in the case,” Senior Superintendent of Police, Santosh Kumar Singh, told reporters.

These recurring and horrific incidents of crime against women have sparked outrage. Former UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav said he was “disgusted with the increasing cases of rape, sexual harassment and molestation against women.” He pointed out that women were being forced to commit suicide while the government was busy arraging cosmetic campaigns like “Mission Shakti” and “Pink Booth”.

Social media users also denounced the crime and raised questions about the government in relation to the ever worsening situation of law and order in the state.
