It’s been a while since fans caught a glimpse of actor Sushmita Sen, whose last feature film released nearly a decade ago. But as a new trailer has revealed this week, the wait won’t be much longer. Sen has already been on the receiving end of praise for the new Hotstar Special “Aarya”.
It’s been a while since fans caught a glimpse of actor Sushmita Sen, whose last feature film was released nearly a decade ago. But, as a new trailer has revealed this week, the wait won’t be much longer, as Sen is back to gracing our screens with her presence — only this time she seems to have swapped out her flowing sarees from Main Hoon Na for a much more sombre look and a gun. The trailer of the new Hotstar Special “Aarya” was released earlier this week, and Sen has already been on the receiving end of praise for the way she seems to have shifted from glam to badass so effortlessly for the role.
Many saw the brief appearance as vindication for Sen’s acting prowess, which has often gone underlooked in her mainstream Bollywood appearances. Some noted in the YouTube comments that she had finally been cast in a role that does her skills justice.
A number of artists were so hooked by the trailer — and Sushmita Sen’s fierce look as the titular character — that they’ve taken to social media to share artwork inspired by the new avatar. Given the theme of the trailer, a number of these artists referenced other crime thrillers to show their appreciation for the actor’s comeback.
One artist, who goes by @sarcastic.ind on Instagram, saw similarities between Sushmita Sen’s “Aarya” and the iconic “The Godfather” trilogy — a comparison that Sen has also made in a recent interview — especially given that the trailer seems to indicate that the plot revolves around a family-run crime syndicate.

Another artist reimagined the cast of the film as characters in Anurag Kashyap’s acclaimed film, Gangs of Wasseypur, which centred around the coal mafia of Dhanbad and the power struggle between three crime families.

One of Amitabh Bachchan’s most iconic films, Agneepath, was referenced by another artist, who reimagined the poster with the highly-underrated Sen as the protagonist. That film was also centred around a heroin smuggling ring, which, as Aarya’s trailer has teased, may also find mention in the Hotstar Special.

The cult film, Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai, was also given a twist. The poster of Ajay Devgn-starrer — which centred around the infamous dons of Mumbai — was changed to include the cast of Aarya, and was renamed “Once Upon a Time in Jaipur”, giving us an idea of where the series will be set.

The spy thriller Tiger Zinda Hai, meanwhile, was renamed “Tigress Zinda Hai” by an artist — and also a number of YouTube commenters who appreciated the way Sen breathes life into the trailer.
Going by these posters, we suspect that “Aarya” will be an action packed crime thriller that fans are not going to want to miss. Given all the excitement, we couldn’t resist jumping on the bandwagon, and reimagined a few movie posters of our own…
Here’s Sushmita Sen taking the place of “Subhedar Tanhaji Malusare”, in the poster of the historic film, Tanhaji, which starred Ajay Devgn.

We also noticed some similarities with the upcoming Rohit Shetty film Sooryavanshi — mostly that both the Sushmita Sen series, and the Akshay Kumar film, have fans waiting eagerly in anticipation.

The wait to find out what the show is about won’t be long though; the series is due to release tomorrow. So mark your calendars!

Add to listFeatures 5 reasons why you should watch The Wheel Of Time
Mythology is the new sci-fi. Both in literature and entertainment, mythologies are constantly dictating the way we consume and imagine content. There is perhaps a reason for that. For one, the universality of the language itself. Irrespective of geography, mythologies echo similar motifs and anxieties. Across continents, people perpetually debate good and bad, the nature of godliness and the face of evil. It makes sense then that some of our most iconic, and loved characters today are borrowed from mythological mores. But it’s been some time since we’ve witnessed something as grand, and epic as the source material often suggests. Amazon Prime Video’s The Wheel of Time, however, looks set to confound and fascinate with its scale, complexity and authenticity.
