Durgamati: The Myth is not your run-off-the-mill scary movie. But there are enough haunted scenes to make your heart race and plenty of plot twists that will keep you guessing until the end.
The horror-thriller Durgamati: The Myth streaming on Amazon Prime Video starring Bhumi Pednekar and Arshad Warsi delivers spectacularly on both those counts. The haunted scenes from the ancient Haveli will ensure you skip a heartbeat or two and the thrilling plot twists will keep you hooked, as you constantly try to unravel the mystery behind the myth.
Durgamati is a rollercoaster involving horror, drama, action, and betrayal. Here are five mind-bending moments from the film that you need to watch out for:
1. Kuch Toh Gadbad Hai
When IAS officer Chanchal Chahuah (Bhumi Pednakar) is brought to a haunted haveli for questioning, the disabled chowkidar provides the first sense of shock. His demeanor and body language suggest that something is amiss. His loud and fiery proclamation, as he gets down on his knees to apologize to “ma”, warning all that “no one will survive” and “everyone will die” sets up the movie for a spooky ride.
2. The Durgamati Avatar
Until this moment in the film, IAS officer Chanchal Chahuah (Bhumi Pednakar) is an upright public servant. When she is kept in a haunted haveli for interrogation, we see flashes of her being possessed; there are injury marks on her body and a subtle change in her voice. However, the highpoint of the film comes after she is completely possessed and shows up in the Durgamati avatar in all her glory and splendour. The passionate monologue she delivers with rage will stay with the audience long after the film is over.
3. Don’t Mess With Durgamati
ACP Abhay Singh (Jisshu Sengupta) enters the haveli looking to take out Chanchal in an encounter. However, he comes across a possessed Durgamati, who is having none of that. There’s no trace of the old Chanchal.
The scene where Pednekar is constantly pounding at her hand with a hammer even after it’s bleeding like a river is one of the most powerful moments in the film. A possessed Durgamati with a picturesque painting on her back, a massive fire raging in front of her, and a helpless Abhay Singh watching the action unfold as he lays on the ground injured throws light on the power dynamic between the characters. Durgamati’s time had arrived, and how!
4. Death and Despair
Right at the beginning of the film, we find out that Chanchal shot ACP Abhay Singh’s brother Shakti and is behind bars for the crime. However, there was more to the story than meets the eye, which we find out through a flashback sequence towards the end of the film. It is an emotionally powerful moment in the movie, and exposes the cruel nature of politics and public life. A scene bound to tear you up.
5. Is She? Is She Not?
For a large part of the movie, everyone is led to believe that Chanchal was possessed by the spirit of Durgamati. However, there are a series of stunning plot twists towards the end that’ll leave everyone scratching their heads. You think you’ve figured the whole thing out and the situation completely turns on its head in the next two minutes. And that keeps happening right till the end, as the credits roll. One might as well pluck a flower and do the classic “Is she Durgamati? Is she not?” The ending is definitely one to watch out for!
Durgamati is not your run-off-the-mill horror movie, but it has scary moments and plot twists by the bucketful. The movie also touches upon elements of political life, business corruption, and religious belief. Watching it is a wholesome experience.
Come for the horror, stay for the thrill!
